Celebrating Excellence: UDS Faculty of Social Science Students Shine at National Awards

On April 16, 2025, the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University for Development Studies (UDS) was abuzz with excitement as two exceptional students from the Department of Political Science presented their hard-earned awards to the Dean. This moment marked a significant achievement not just for the students, but for the entire faculty, showcasing the talent and leadership potential nurtured within the university.

Alhassan Abdul Malik, a standout figure in student politics, proudly accepted the Best Student Politician of the Year award at the prestigious National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Awards. This accolade is a testament to his dedication and impactful contributions to student governance and advocacy. As he handed over his plaque and certificate to the Dean, it was clear that his efforts had not gone unnoticed. Alhassan's commitment to representing the voices of his peers has set a high standard for future student leaders at UDS.

In a remarkable display of leadership, Abdul Malik Dawuda also made headlines by winning the Best Student in Youth Leadership (Politics) Zone B category at the Ghana Tertiary Achiever's Awards 2025, organized by the Africa Dreams Foundation. This award scheme, which celebrates outstanding tertiary students across various fields, saw Dawuda nominated as the representative for UDS.

The journey to this accolade began with the open of nomination to all tertiary institutions across the country and culminated in a competitive voting period.

Alhassan and Dawuda’s determination and the support of their peers propelled them to victory, emerging as the winners in their various categories. The award night, was a grand affair, bringing together winners and runners-up from all categories to celebrate their achievements.

As Alhassan and Dawuda received their awards, they reflected on the significance of their recognition, not just for themselves, but for the entire UDS community. "These awards are a collective achievement," they stated. "It represents the hard work and support of our fellow students and mentors who have guided us along the way."

The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Eliasu Alhassan expressed immense pride in the accomplishments of both students. Echoing that, Alhassan and Dawuda exemplify the spirit of leadership and dedication that we strive to instil in students. Their achievements according Prof. Eliasu, are a source of inspiration for all of us, and we look forward to seeing how they will continue to impact society positively.
